Hey, all you flower people...

What are some non-toxic to kids (I plan to teach Gabey not to eat flowers/plants, but I'd rather be safe) flowers that can grow well in mostly shade in Illinois? I was going to put in Lily of the Valley but just saw them on the toxic list.

Gabey just learned to crawl last Friday and we recently got a big new climber in the backyard (and plan to spend a lot of time out there), so this is particularly important to me right now. :-)

Nasturtiums, violets. I think pansies and/or petunias are okay, but those are cooler weather.

Chives and garlic blossom tastily. Anise hyssop. Borage may need more sun. I think Broccoli likes sun, too, but its blossoms are pretty and kinda tasty.

Aw, heck. I'll just show you this page:

There are lots of good herbs -- thyme, mint. Nasturtiums like sun, no?

Another vote for pansies, violets, and mints. Also nasturtiums are very tasty and good in salads.

I believe violets are non-toxic, although I think their kinda considered a weed so theres that to consider. We have them in our yard and I love them they don't take over really their just scattered around randomly but I think thats because no one actually planted them.

I have a book about edible flowers. Besides nasturtiums, violets and the herbal flowers mentioned above, roses, marigolds, tulips, and zucchini flowers are all mentioned. Most of those do need bright sun, though.

I think one of the Dr. Sears books has a list of low-toxicity houseplants, together with a list of plants to avoid.

Hi, I'm an old friend of Erin's ([info]thatmama) I used to have a different journal, but I haven't seen or heard from her since she randomly stopped posting in July 2006. I'm wondering if you know of her whereabouts or if she's ok? Do you know anyone on her friends list that might have been closer to her? I'm a little concerned. Someone else thought you might know?

Thanks.

I'm sorry. I haven't heard anything about her in all these years either.
